San Francisco Bay lies in the middle of our 7.5 million person metropolitan area. We urbanites and suburbanites bring a range of local problems to the Bay, including filled wetlands, coastal erosion, plastic litter, and urban runoff. The Bay also faces broader problems like rising sea levels, acidification, invasive species, oil spills, habitat loss and sedimentation.

Despite these daunting threats, the Bay remains an active ecosystem, with thriving and evolving populations of plankton, plants and animals. It brings us moderate temperatures, recreation opportunities, open space, transportation and industry, while removing waste and pollutants. Understanding the services the Bay provides for us, as well as the threats we impose on in return, is vital for maintaining the quality of life we currently enjoy in San Mateo and Foster City.

The Bearcats of San Mateo High School are well situated to study and appreciate the Bay. In addition to being a short walk from the Bay at Coyote Point, we have a thriving science department, featuring one of the country's leading Biotechnology programs.

Bearcats by the Bay is a free, one-week science camp for current 7th graders run by San Mateo High School science teachers. Campers will join with other students to learn about San Francisco Bay through the lenses of four high school sciences--biology, chemistry, physics and biotechnology.

In addition to learning about the Bay, campers will gain familiarity with high school science classes, labs and teachers. They will learn important laboratory and organizational skills that will give them a nice advantage when they get to high school.

Finally, campers will have fun every morning learning about their environment with their friends. They will learn to see and appreciate the aquatic parts of their homeland from a new perspective -- the perspective of science.

Five Mornings of Science

On the first three mornings as Bearcats by the Bay, campers will rotate through experiences in biology, chemistry and physics. They will then complete the camp experience with two mornings of biotechnology labs.

For the Biology Strand, we'll be working along the shore of the Bay, surveying…
     • Tidepool organisms
     • Plankton distribution
     • Shorebird diversity
     • Plastic debris concerns

For the Chemistry Strand, we'll be in the lab, learning about the water in the Bay, examining things like…
     • Carbon dioxide and ocean acidification
     • Estuary salinity and conductivity
     • Water pollution and water filtration
     • Oil spills

For the Physics Strand, we'll look at how the water in the Bay relates to...
     • Levee design and construction
     • Boat design and buoyancy
     • Waves and wave energy
     • Harbor and marina design

Finally for the two Biotechnology Strands, we will use equipment from our award winning biotechnology lab to...
     • Extract DNA from Bay organisms
     • Analyze proteins via gel electrophoresis
     • Grow marine microorganisms in culture
     • Spool DNA from salmon

Join us!, Just fill out the 2012 Camp Application and return it to San Mateo High School by June 1, 2012. You will be notified of acceptance by June 6, 2012.
